For more than 48,000 kilometres filmmaker and photographer Thomas Zeller and filmmaker Christine Lechner were on the road travelling across America on US trains. In doing so they spent hundreds of hours observing the country from a train window and interviewing passengers on the American dream, or what remains of it.
This brings into sight the diversity and contradictions that stretch along the railroad track. While in the east, one passes meticulously tidy single-family houses, small farms and large industrial complexes, the north and south of the country are characterized by vast, seemingly endless land- scapes. The residing farm houses lay widely scattered, the mobile home parks are often in dilapida- ted states. The westernmost rail line, on the other hand, impresses with the picturesque view of the Pacific Ocean as one travels south from Seattle, Washington to Los Angeles, California.
This photographic inventory unveils so much about this country without ever losing sight of its essential character. With great deal of perseverance and excellent powers of observation the two authors have created a unique, exciting photographic document.
